Terrace Bay Dragfest 2015

Hear the Roar by the Shore (Race Results)

With the smell of burnt rubber thick in the air, over 200 racers battled their way to the winner's podium this past weekend. Doug Belanger, Reliability Manager at Resolute Sawmill, represented EWI at this year's Drag Fest, racing his modified 1968 Camaro. Coming fully equipped with a Big Block 540 Cubic inch Chevy engine, a 1150 CFM Dominator carburetor & a 2 speed powerGlide transmission, this Camaro has just under 1000 hp with 800 hp at the rear tires. After two days of time trials, elimination rounds began and the pressure was on, as 1 one thousandth of a second could make a difference of whether you foul on a red light or break out of your time bracket. Bracket racing is all about consistent driving skills, a reliable car and top-notch track conditions as you race against your dial in time.

Doug knows all too well how fickle track conditions can be and therefore response time differing from your car. He was in a full fledge battle for first place, out driving many fierce and experienced drivers for first place of the Super Pro title. You would never think going too fast a bad thing, unless of course you beat your own time bracket and 'break out' therefore forfeiting first place to your competitor. Doug had his pedal to the metal, running a 9.19 second quarter mile at 150mph and took first place in the Super Pro Division. This is Doug’s first win in the Super Pro Division, having placed in the top 3 numerous times.

Doug’s love of racing all started thirteen years ago when he began the restoration of his 1967 Camaro SS, which at that time looked more like junkyard scrap than an automobile, but with a lot of love and sweat within 12 months Doug had restored this classic to its original beauty. Entering into many local car shows since then has won him and his ’67 car numerous awards at the "Shine and Show" competitions.

Once satisfied with the original look of his car, Doug decided it was time to test his mechanical expertise and gave this beauty some performance muscle. With 400-horsepower under the hood, and natural driving skills he placed first and in the top 3 many times, including races at Terrace Bay, Brainerd International Raceway and Rock Falls Raceway. Once he tasted that victory he knew he wanted more power and speed and added his modified ’68 to the race team.

Whether its first place or eliminations, Doug will always have a smile on his face when it comes to his cars and when he's not outrunning a competitor on the quarter mile he can been seen driving around town in his classic 67, obviously, enjoying the best of both worlds.
